Finding a mental health counselor/therapist can be tricky but there are definitely certain steps you can take to find a professional that will cater sessions to your unique needs. So how to find the “right” therapist for you?
Set your goals and intentions for therapy
Although you may be struggling with not one, not two but three, or more issues, it’s important to identify which one of them you would like to address first and go from there. Make your concerns clear and prioritize them.
What are your expectations from therapy, your short-term and long-term goals?
Describe your “right” therapist
Remember that there are not perfect therapists out there, just as there are no perfect people. However, I would recommend you to be specific about your needs and wants for the right therapist for you.
Identify the personality traits you are looking for. Think compassion, sense of humor, warmth, care, etc. Keep in mind that your therapist is not necessarily your friend, but someone who will guide your way to healing. It is your mentor.
If you can, think about what kind of therapy you would like to receive, or at least what method you are interested in.
Before the consultation
Do your research
Review your therapist’s bio, check out their website, read the reviews if possible. You may find lots of useful information and will be able to form your questions better.
Get ready
Have your questions ready for the consultation. Always be prepared. You can ask about their experience, how long they have been practicing, their therapeutic approaches, and what type of license they carry.
To find out more information you can visit a Board’s website for behavioral health and check if someone’s license is active as well as if they have any violations.
